Whatever you want from life, things can get in the waysmall-2

And it was no different for me.  Blessed with a  general lack of confidence, coupled with simply not knowing what I wanted out of life, resulted in me spending a large proportion of my career without direction.

A series of sensible but successful career moves meant that I was doing OK, but at 30 I knew that I’d reached the peak of my retail management career, and wanted to do something different.

I embarked on a whole new career in Risk Management.  I utilised the confidence I had built over the last ten years to make a career change. I chose to remain within financial services and accepted a much more brain stretching analytical role with great prospects.

And for a while this was great.  However the reality was that I ended up in a role that wasn’t using my people skills and I became dissatisfied with my job.

Being confined by my current role also meant that planning my future and getting out and doing the things I really wanted to do, including creating myself a better work-life balance, just didn’t happen.

I invested in my own personal development, rebuilt both my self-esteem and lost confidence and took the decision to retrain.  It took some time to figure out what I wanted to do and, once I had that focus, that goal, I was able to take the steps I needed to make a complete change in career; this time leaving behind the financial services world and everything that felt safe and comfortable.  Reflections Coaching was born because through coaching I realised that we have to make things happen in life.  I am now drawing on my own experiences to help others make the changes they need to to make their work work for them.   I am now self-employed and have more control around my work/life balance, but more importantly I am happy, confident and fulfilled.

I have needed to deal with my own self beliefs about my abilities to run a business, dig deep for the strength of character to deal with the doubters who have attempted to talk me out of it and learn some new skills too. Its been an exciting and empowering journey.

I know that making decisions can be difficult, all decisions have consequences large or small, and it is these consequences that often leave us feeling ‘stuck‘.  Sometimes we just need some time to think and work out what our goals are and prepare ourselves to tackle them.

Confidence, self belief, decision making and determination can be learned, along with learning how to set and achieve realistic goals.  The hardest part for me was accepting that it’s OK to have self doubt and that I wasn’t on my own with this.

I am now managing my own career and life effectively and, if I can do it, then so can you; sometimes we just need a little extra support and direction.

Whether you’re employed or self employed, coping with stress or wanting to achieve a better work life balance, facing change at work or wanting to carve out a different career, having the time and space plus a person to work through your goals with you can make a real difference to whether you make your dreams a reality.
